Practical AI · Lesson 2 of 5

Turn Rough Notes into a Clear Plan

Use an AI assistant to organize a small money task into an action list without letting it invent dates, owners, or commitments. Fictional practice notes.

10-minute lessonBeginnerUpdated

In this lesson you will

Turn messy notes into a short action list that keeps facts, unknowns, and suggestions separate, so you decide what happens next.

The idea in plain language

A pile of notes is not a plan. AI assistants are good at organizing, and also good at filling gaps with confident guesses. Your job is to define the output, forbid guessing, and check each line against your notes.

Three habits make this work:

  • Define the table. Ask for specific columns, including one for missing information.
  • Forbid invention. Tell it to write “unknown” instead of guessing a date or amount.
  • Separate suggestions. Extra ideas go in their own section, so they never look like decisions.

Worked example

IllustrationSetting up a bill calendar from notes (fictional)

Practice prompt
Help me turn these fictional notes into an action list for setting up a monthly bill calendar.
Notes: paychecks land on the 5th and the 20th; rent is due on the 1st; the phone bill is due on the 2nd and might be movable; car insurance is paid twice a year; I want a small buffer in checking; I am not sure when the gym membership renews.
Return a table with: task, next action, deadline, missing information.
Use only facts in the notes. Write "unknown" where a date or amount is missing. Put extra ideas in a separate "suggestions to consider" section.
Do not contact anyone, make payments, or change any account.
Finish with the one question I should answer first.

Read the result next to the notes. A good answer keeps the gym renewal date as unknown, does not invent an insurance amount, and does not claim the phone due date has already moved.

This is the same calendar from the cash flow lesson. The assistant organizes it; you still supply the facts.

Try it: make it smaller

  1. Run the practice prompt, then compare every row with the notes.
  2. Cross out anything invented. Mark extra ideas as suggestions only.
  3. Add one real constraint, such as “I have 20 minutes this week,” and ask for a smaller plan.
  4. Keep the version you would actually follow, even if it looks less impressive.

Check the result yourself

Limits of this lesson

  • The assistant cannot know your real due dates or balances. Check each one against your statements.
  • Do not paste account numbers, statements, or passwords to build a plan. Placeholders work just as well.
  • No subscription, connected account, or automated agent is needed for this exercise.

Keep the human review

Examples are practice exercises, not tested AI outputs or a promise of results. During practice, do not give an assistant permission to send, publish, buy, or change anything in an account.
