In this lesson you will
Know what never to paste into an AI tool, redact a money task with placeholders, and find the data settings in the assistant you use.
The idea in plain language
Most money tasks do not need your real identifiers. An assistant can organize a budget built from “Bill A, about $80” just as well as from your real account statement. Leave out anything that could be used to identify you, access an account, or harm someone else.
Never paste
- Passwords, PINs, one-time codes, or security answers.
- Full account, card, or routing numbers, and Social Security or tax ID numbers.
- Full statements, pay stubs, or tax forms.
- Other people's personal details without their permission.
- Work or client information your employer has not approved for that tool.
Check the tool's settings
Tools differ and change, so read the current data settings for the one you use.
FactAs of October 7, 2026, OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” so new conversations are not used to train its models, and that temporary chats are not used to improve its models but may be kept for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Worked example
IllustrationRedacting a bill list before asking for help
| Original note | Safe to paste |
|---|---|
| FirstBank checking ****4417 has $612 | Checking: about $600 |
| Rent to Oakview Apartments, unit 3B, $1,150 on the 1st | Rent: about $1,150, due on the 1st |
| PhoneCo autopay on the 2nd from card ending 9902 | Phone: autopay from a card, due on the 2nd |
| Paycheck from Acme Corp, $1,384.22 on the 5th | Paycheck: about $1,400 on the 5th |
Round amounts, replace names with roles, and drop account numbers. The plan comes out the same.
Try it: redact one real task
- Pick a small money task you want help with.
- Write it out, then replace names, employers, and account numbers with placeholders.
- Round amounts to the nearest $10 or $100.
- Open your AI tool's settings and find its data or privacy controls. Note what they say about training and retention.
- Only then paste the redacted version.
Checklist
Limits of this lesson
- Settings and policies change. The OpenAI details above were checked on October 7, 2026 and may differ by plan or workspace.
- Turning off training does not mean nothing is stored. Read the retention terms for your tool and plan.
- This lesson is general guidance, not legal or security advice for a business.
Keep the human review
Examples are practice exercises, not tested AI outputs or a promise of results. During practice, do not give an assistant permission to send, publish, buy, or change anything in an account.
